The “1,000 Ambassadors Movement” officially launched today in Vancouver. The organizer, the University Chinese Philanthropy Initiative Foundation (UCPI), says the movement is designed to support UBC’s Blue & Gold Campaign for Students, and to motivate more volunteers to get involved in local philanthropy.
UCPI is a newly formed non-for-profit organization. Many of UCPI’s members completed their higher education with Canadian scholarships. According to Hao Shi, President of UCPI, the goal of the movement is to promote UCPI’s mission to encourage more Chinese Canadians to make charitable contributions to local communities. UCPI also hopes the movement will raise philanthropic awareness in the community.
UCPI initiated the “1,000 Ambassadors Movement” at its 2018 Golden Autumn Gala in Support of UBC’s Blue & Gold Campaign, which was held at the Four Seasons in downtown Vancouver on November 6, 2018. UBC launched the Blue & Gold Campaign for Students last fall to support promising and talented students, with the goal of raising $100 million over three years. UCPI actively supports the campaign and has committed to make contributions to it.
At the gala, UCPI kicked off its “1,000 Ambassadors Movement”, announcing that they will engage 1,000 volunteers to participate in the project. Anyone who is passionate about giving back and willing to support the campaign can become a UCPI Ambassador (千人慈善大使) by raising or donating $100 CAD for UBC’s Blue & Gold Campaign.
Over 100 local businesses and community leaders attended the Gala, including UBC President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Santa J. Ono. Professor Ono expressed appreciation for UCPI’s support of UBC’s Blue & Gold Campaign, and wished UCPI success on their first charity project.
UCPI also disclosed at the event that they have developed a one-year plan to promote the “1,000 Ambassadors Movement”. They hope that about 1,000 “Ambassadors” will join the movement by the end of next year.
